A total of 77 students in Negros Oriental have qualified to be this year’s recipients of Department of Science & Technology-Science Education Institute’s Science and Technology (Undergraduate Scholarships.
DOST here welcomed the new scholars in a virtual event that featured discussions on the provisions of the scholarships and the scholars’ duties and responsibilities, followed by a signing of the scholarship contract.
This year’s Undergraduate Scholarship program aims to push for knowledge-driven development through S&T human resource advancement.
The scholars expressed their thanks to be part of the new DOST-SEI Scholars as their parents can hardly support them financially for them to finish a four-year course.
A student noted that being a scholar is not just all about the benefits but it is also about acknowledging own responsibilities as future scientists and educators in the country.
In his message to the students, S&T Provincial Director Atty. Gilbert Arbon encouraged them to study and strive for excellence while staying healthy physically and mentally for them to remain focused on their role as “iskolar ng bayan” until they graduate with flying colors.
Due to the pandemic, DOST selected their qualifiers to the scholarship program based on the applicant’s grades from Grade 9 to Grade 11, said Marjorie Bajado, DOST scholarship coordinator.
The scholarship program aims to stimulate and entice talented Filipino youths to pursue lifetime productive careers in science and technology and ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified S&T human resources that can steer the country towards national progress. (JCT/PIA7 NegOr)
