The 9th of April Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) (also known as Bataan Day) commemorates the bravery of Filipino and American soldiers mark the importance of “Araw ng Kagitingan,” is intended to memorialize the fact that the Philippines was the last country to surrender to the Japanese in Southeast Asia.It is right and fitting to honor and remember all those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation, in times of war. After World War II, the whole world realized that there are really no victors, only victims of war.

In this modern world there is not an absence of heroes. There are heroes in our everyday society, our community and even in our own families. What makes someone a hero? Is it saving lives, acting in a moment, speaking out, or sacrificing your life to fight for others, or acting on environmental advocacy? Or is it someone you work with, your teacher or your favorite priest or pastor? This makes it hard to identify what a true hero is.

True heroism is when an ordinary person do something out of the ordinary, some courageous act. Take a look around, as on the 25th of in the Women’s Month of March, six women who call themselves “OCEAN 6”, composed of Ching Furbeyre, Frances Yap, Sheila Pabalate, Maru Rodriguez, Flom Barot-Datoy and Monique Furbeyre, crossed the 6.4 km. Tanon Strait, in 3hours, more or less. This event was created to focus on the environment of Tanon Strait and for the cause of empowering women to do great things in life; despite size, age, and career. For 12 year old, Holy Cross Grade 6 student, SOPHIA SOLEDAD YAP, it is her aunt, Dr. Frances Hope Siton Yap, a retina specialist, of the ACES EYE CLINIC, whose heroic feat impressed her, to write in her own words, thus: “There are people that crossed one island to another by swimming. Some might say “that’s impossible?!” Well on march 25, 2018 a group of female swimmers called Ocean 6, by the names of Maru, Flom and Monique, Chesa and Frances swam from Cebu to Sibulan, and this is very impossible task but they made it possible. Not only they made the impossible possible, but they all are the first women ever to cross from one island to another.

Others were shocked of about what they did and it was not easy. But on their way they had a strong support team consisting of a doctor, nurses and the coaches Nino Pinero and Carlo Palcado and coast guards and family and friends to support them in their swim journey and they said “we are very thankful for their support.“ Also they had advise from a marine biologist Rene Abesanus, according to my interview with one of the swimmers of Ocean 6, Frances with his wise advice, they knew what they had to they were more confident about their decision then I ask one of the swimmers Frances “what were you’re first thoughts about going to the Ocean?“ I was afraid at first but my friends who were swimming with me and the strong support I received I felt less afraid and more brave to face this challenge together with my friends”.

Then I asked “what inspired you and the others of ocean 6 to start this swim journey?“ she answered “March was the International Women’s Day we wanted to prove that women can also do anything” after that exhausting journey they were interviewed by lots of media, such as Philproducts, Bandilyo Radio and dumaguete.com that’s how interested the media is about their huge accomplishment but they are not only just doing this for the international women’s month, but they are challenging themselves to do the impossible. These were once thoughts, but they made it a reality.

Sometimes you just have to think possible if you want reach for your dreams because your dream can be a big help to the world so don’t be afraid to try impossible things sometimes it can help contribute to other stuff that can be important to you, you’re friends, family and the world. Ocean 6 are one of the role models who proved that women can do anything if they try and believe.”

SO, ANYONE CAN BE A HERO! CONGRATULATIONS, OCEAN 6!
