The recent inclusion of the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park in the esteemed list of ASEAN Heritage Parks is a resounding testament to the rich biodiversity of Negros Oriental. Nestled in the municipality of Sibulan, this 8,016-hectare sanctuary stands as a beacon of conservation excellence, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of diverse flora and fauna within its pristine ecosystems.

As one of the newly recognized heritage parks, alongside the Apo Reef in Occidental Mindoro and the Turtle Islands in Tawi-Tawi, Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park brings pride not only to the province but to the entire Philippines. It serves as a habitat for globally significant and endemic species, such as the Critically Endangered Philippine Tube-nosed Fruit Bat and the Visayan Spotted Deer. Its thriving population of 325 fern species, 237 tree species, 27 mammalian fauna, and 209 bird species is a vivid reminder of nature’s splendor and resilience.

This recognition by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) underscores the park’s vital role in regional conservation efforts. The ASEAN Heritage Parks Program has, for four decades, championed the connectivity of ecosystems across Southeast Asia. Balinsasayao’s inclusion affirms its importance as a sanctuary that not only preserves biodiversity but also bolsters ecotourism and community development in Negros Oriental.

Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park is more than just a destination; it is a living classroom and a source of inspiration. Its lush landscapes and crystal-clear waters invite us to reflect on the urgency of environmental stewardship. Let this accolade serve as a call to action for sustained conservation efforts, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at the unparalleled natural beauty of this remarkable sanctuary.

Negros Oriental has proven itself a custodian of biodiversity, and with the ASEAN Heritage Park recognition, its commitment to protecting nature’s treasures shines brightly for the world to see.
