Today marks the 40th day of my friend’s death, Carlo Simpao. Who was Carlo? He didn’t come from wealth, political dynasties nor did he come from poverty. He wasn’t an exceptional athlete nor was he a famous celebrity or entertainer. He was Carlo, a friend, a loving father, a confidant, a mentor to our entheosIT and Foundation University Community and most importantly someone that believed that anything in a young persons life was possible. He was 39.
At 39 I was new to Dumaguete and FU with my family to start a new life and to reboot FU into the next 50 years. I too at 39 believed that anything was possible in a young person’s life. I met Carlo a few years after that and shortly thereafter, it was evident to me that he too was a true believer in helping people build opportunities to benefit everyone.
I ponder often the circumstances of his death and I can only wonder why!
Why does that short piece of road continue to be a hazard to all citizens!
Why do traffic managers certified/uncertified continue to expose motorists to unnecessary risks!
Why do motorcycle drivers continue to ply the roads with disrespect and impunity for all motor vehicle laws!
Why do authorities, government or private continue to tolerate disregard for life and limb!
Why would some that would read this opinion, consider this unfair and unmitigated!
39 is a bright age for many professionals, just hitting your stride and enjoying the benefits simultaneously. I asked my mother the other day of the significance of Ash Wednesday. She told me it signifies the beginning of the Lenten season, she also told me that it also reminds us of our own mortality – ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
At 39 as far as Carlo’s family is concerned the latter is all that they can look forward to for their father and spouse; and for me as his friend.
For the Dumaguete community, Carlo is a lost asset.
Why!
