My journey to fitness has been a transformative experience, marked by challenges that tested my spirit and resilience. It is a journey rooted in God’s loving mercy, guiding me through the darkest moments towards a brighter, healthier future.
In late February 2021, I began experiencing alarming symptoms: shortness of breath (SOB), sleepless nights, and persistent coughing. Initially, I brushed them off, thinking they might indicate asthma, a condition that runs in my family. However, as I would struggle to ascend the stairs to my office, I realized that something was seriously amiss. Friends and colleagues also expressed concern over my labored breathing, which only intensified my worries.
Having endured a harrowing experience in December 2020 when my husband contracted COVID-19, I was hesitant to seek medical attention; but as my SOB became more pronounced, I knew I had to take action.
Eventually, I consulted a cardiologist, Dr. Mitzi Chio at the SU Medical Center-Heart Institute. Her compassionate approach and effective prescriptions felt like a lifeline. Tests revealed that my ejection fraction was alarmingly low at 32 percent, indicating potential heart failure. The recommendation for an angiogram added to my stress, but I was grateful for the support of my cardiologist, my family, and friends who accompanied me on this journey.
As I faced the cath lab at St. Luke’s Hospital in Quezon City, I clung to my faith, praying silently for healing. I found comfort in the presence of a caring nurse who reassured me throughout the procedure. It was a surreal moment, filled with both fear and hope.
After the angiogram, I was diagnosed with chronic non-ischemic cardiomyopathy.
The journey continued with further tests, including an MRI, which brought its own set of fears and uncertainties. We struggled with the financial burden of medical expenses, compounded by the emotional toll of my diagnosis.
Despite these challenges, I found joy in the camaraderie with family and friends during my hospital stay. We laughed over the irony of my “heart delights” diet, finding light in dark moments. My relationship with family and friends became a source of strength, reminding me that I was not alone.
A year later, my health took another hit as my blood sugar and creatinine levels rose above normal. The thought of facing dialysis or a kidney transplant terrified me.
My cardiologist suggested the possibility of a pacemaker, which sent me into a spiral of reflection and prayer.
It became clear that I needed to make significant lifestyle changes. I struggled to exercise regularly, often feeling drained after work.
However, the encouragement of my friends at work sparked a new resolve. We began exercising together, fostering a supportive community that motivated me to stay active.
Brisk-walking became my primary form of exercise, a gentle yet effective way to reintroduce movement into my daily routine.
Although I couldn’t always maintain a consistent schedule, each step I took felt like a triumph over the challenges I faced. The rhythm of my feet hitting the pavement became a meditative practice, allowing me to reflect on my journey and appreciate my progress.
During my walking sessions, I discovered a precious opportunity for solitude and reflection—my personal “me time.”
As I strolled around the Perdices Oval, I found myself praying, looking up at the heavens, and taking in the beauty of the acadia trees and the mere sight of Mt. Talinis around me. In those moments, I expressed my gratitude to God for this opportunity to heal and grow, thanking Him for His constant love and care.
I felt immense appreciation for my family and friends, who have stood by me through thick and thin, never leaving my side during my most challenging moments.
Alongside my commitment to walking, I embarked on a significant transformation of my diet. I made a conscious decision to drastically reduce my sugar intake, moving away from the indulgences that had previously defined my meals.
This shift was not just about cutting out sweets but also about embracing a healthier lifestyle. I began to prefer warm water over cold, finding comfort in its soothing properties. My meals became more focused on vegetables, opting for vibrant salads and hearty vegetable dishes, while limiting my fruit intake. Instead of reaching for coffee, I switched to teas infused with lemon, adding a zesty flavor that invigorated my mornings.
I also made a significant change by eliminating refined carbohydrates from my diet. I replaced white rice with red rice, a more nutritious option that provided essential nutrients and fiber. Whole grain breads became a staple, including wheat bread and oatmeal enriched with chia seeds, which boosted my energy levels and supported my heart health.
One delightful addition to my breakfast routine was overnight oats, which quickly became a favorite. I would prepare them with rolled oats soaked in milk, adding small amounts of dried sweet fruits for a touch of natural sweetness. This nutritious and convenient breakfast option satisfied my hunger, and kept me energized throughout the morning.
Inspired by a close friend and officemate who also faced heart issues, I adopted her approach to healthy-eating. Together, we explored the world of Italian dips, crafting delightful mixtures of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and a variety of fresh herbs. These dips became a delicious accompaniment for our focaccia, and whole grain breads, turning our meals into flavorful experiences without compromising our health.
My meal structure evolved as well; I opted for lighter breakfasts, allowing my body to ease into the day without overwhelming it. Lunchtime became an opportunity for a more substantial meal, providing the energy I needed to power through the afternoon. By the time dinner rolled around, I kept it light, focusing on easily-digestible options that wouldn’t interfere with my sleep.
This holistic approach to fitness and nutrition has not only improved my physical health but has also nurtured my spirit.
Each mindful choice I make—whether it’s a brisk walk or a nourishing meal—reinforces my commitment to a healthier lifestyle. I am learning to celebrate every small victory, knowing that each step brings me closer to my goals.
Through prayer and gratitude during my walks, I find strength and inspiration to continue on this journey of healing and self-discovery.
By September 2023, I received encouraging news from my cardiologist: my heart was “almost normal”. This milestone was a testament to my hard work, and the power of faith.
My journey to fitness is a testament to resilience, community, and divine mercy. Each challenge has shaped me into a stronger person, as I continue to work hard to maintain my health. I am grateful for the lessons learned and the love that surrounds me, knowing that I am on a path to fitness, and a journey of healing and hope.
