The Asian College of Science & Technology (ACSAT) Lightnings doused the Foundation University Peace Warriors’ hope for the Governor’s Cup championship crown Sunday (Sept. 25) by scoring a 40-point lead in the first of the best of three games, 89-49.
ACSAT, whose players looked fully rested for the game, took advantage of the tired FU Peace Warriors, who had played a close game and won by two points against the Negros Oriental State University one day earlier.
They led all quarters closing the first quarter at 18-14. The Lightnings, powered by lay-ups and jump shots, increased their lead to 45-27 in the second quarter. The third quarter ended with ACSAT leading 67-39 and, confident of their imminent victory, pumped in two three-point shots in the fourth quarter, while keeping the pressure on the Peace Warriors for the lopsided finish.
Despite the loss, Coach Louis Robinson of the FU Peace Warriors said his team played a great game. “I take my hat off to them.”
He said the second game to be played on Monday would be played “with more heart and less mistakes.”
Monday’s games at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center will feature a fight for third place between Silliman University and the Negros Oriental State University starting at 5:30 p.m. and a rematch between ACSAT and FU at 7:30, where FU will hope to salvage Sunday’s loss and play a third game.
