DR. ANGEL C. ALCALA, a Philippine National Scientist and an Ocean Legend Awardee, will receive honors in a tribute on August 29, 2019, 5 in the afternoon, at the Silliman Hall.
In 1991, Alcala became the 9th president of the University and currently vice chair of the Board of Trustees and also recognized as an Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee in Biological Sciences in 1988.
Dr. Alcala was born on March 1, 1929. His mother was Crescenciana Chua, and his father was Porfirio Alcala. The family lived in Caliling, a coastal village in Cauayan in the province of Negros Occidental.

In 1948, Alcala enrolled in an undergraduate degree in biological studies in Silliman University and graduated magna cum laude in 1951. After graduating, Alcala became a teacher at the Biology Department of the university.
He became a Fulbright/Smith-Mundt Fellow and earned his master’s degree in biology in 1959. In 1964, Alcala earned his doctoral studies in Stanford and two years later, he became an associate professor of Silliman University.
In 1994, he was given the Field Museum Founders’ Council Award of Merit for contributions to environmental biology. A recipient of the Magsaysay Award for Public Service, he was also named National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014.
Recently, he was inducted into the first-ever Fulbright Philippines Hall of Fame.
