Police are investigating the motive behind the killing of a motorcab-for-hire (MCH) driver and alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA) who was shot dead in Guihulngan over the weekend.

An initial police report said that around 11 a.m. Sunday, a certain Danny Antone Salazar, a pedicab driver, was shot dead by two riding-in-tandem suspects at Barangay Malusay in Guihulngan City.

Salazar, 46 years old, married and a resident of Sitio Campanica, Barangay Poblacion Guihulngan, was driving his motorcycle-for-hire from Barangay Calamba to the city proper when the suspects shot him three times.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Guihulngan District Hospital.

His passenger, Leocia Silva Catubig, was hit on her left hand.

Guihulngan police chief Supt. Carlos Lacuesta said they still have to determine the motive for the killing, adding they are also looking at reports that Salazar was allegedly a member of the Yunit Militia (YM) of the Communist New People’s Army (NPA)

Lacuesta said the police do not want to be conclusive in saying Salazar was a member of the NPA, but an intelligence report said otherwise.

Lt. Col. Roderick Garcia, commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion, declined to comment on the shooting incident, saying it is for the police to investigate the case. (Judy Flores Partlow/PNA)
