AMLAN, NEGROS ORIENTAL — The Amlan National High School Supreme Student Government last week launched Sikad alang sa Kaugmaon sa Amlan (SAKA), a project aimed at supporting the drop-out reduction program of the school.
The program hopes to provide free transportation — commuter bicycles — to poor but deserving students who have been showing diligence and willingness to finish their studies.
A ceremonial unlocking of the bikelocks was done by Marlene Aragones, Amlan National High School principal, assisted by Rowena Trofeo. Aragones challenged the recipients of the program to pursue their studies until they graduate.
The idea of providing bikes to indigent students came up after the school conducted home visitations of their students, especially those who were constantly affected by calamities. The team found that many of the students would have to walk as far as four kilometers to school for lack of tricycle fare, making them at risk of simply dropping-out.
The launching of the SAKA was attended by the Amlan faculty, staff, and students. Loriane Joyce Aglubat gave the welcome address. Euriley Bulfa explained the objectives of the SAKA project and how it became reality. Initial sponsors included Rowena Trofeo and Julien Sesnorio-Meier. The school hope to have at least 10 bikes this year. (PR)
