An Australian organization has chosen Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital as recipient of a multi-million peso project which is aimed at addressing eye problems of Negrenses.
The Fred Hallows Foundation is donating P10 million worth of eye equipment to the provincial hospital. Under the terms of the donation, the provincial government will provide a counterpart in terms of infrastructure and personnel.
Dr. Henrissa Calumpang, chief of the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) said the province is fortunate to have been chosen as among the eight recipients of the project all over the country.
Launching of the eye center is scheduled on Monday, June 3 at the NOPH outpatient department. Indigent patients will get free eye treatment, except the eye glasses.
Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) chief nurse Grace Baring disclosed the foundation will man the center for the first two years of operation after which it will be sustained by the hospital.
It is for this reason that two nurses from the hospital are being trained in Tarlac to be able to man the center with expenses paid for by the Fred Hallows Foundation.
As part of the project, public schools all over the province are encouraged to help the eye center screen children for eye problems.
During the launching, the foundation will extend free eye glasses to the first 20 patients, Baring said. (Juancho Gallarde)
