Last week, athletes from throughout the Province competed in the sport of athletics in the Governor’s Back-to-School program.
This year saw the greatest increase in competition, as 13 high school teams and 12 elementary teams competed for honors. Thus, competition was more intense than in the previous years.
In the high school boy’s competition, Negros Oriental High school with two team entries combined for a total of 10 gold medals, far ahead of 2nd placer, Pamplona National High School with three gold medals; followed by 3rd placer Ajong National High School with two gold medals.
As for the high school girl’s competition, it was much the same as NOHS captured eight gold medals. Silliman University High School captured three golds, as did the Presbyterian School, but was awarded 2nd place due to its having garnered more silver medals as well.
In the boys elementary level, Siapo Elementary School captured seven gold medals, followed by West City’s three gold medals, and SU Elementary School with two golds. A few other schools took one gold medal each.
Over in the elementary girl’s competition, West City Elementary came out on top with eight gold medals, followed by Silliman with four golds, and Siapo Elementary School with one gold medal.
Soon, cities of Negros Oriental will hold their respective City Meets, and the Province will hold the Provincial Meet as we head toward the Central Visayas Regional Meet, competing with teams from Siquijor, Bohol, and Cebu.

There are a few bright spots over here but the reality is that not much is happening in the sports world of Negros Oriental.
Take a look at the recent ASEAN Youth Games in which only one gold medal was won in athletics, and only three other gold medals were captured by the Philippine team.
Oh, and by the way, the next Youth Games will be hosted by the Dumaguete City local government. Not a pretty picture indeed.
Only 25 school teams competed athletics in this Governor’s Cup — that’s high school and elementary combined. This is not a very convincing hope for the future of athletics here in our Province as we know there are many, many more schools that could have been involved.
Passionate leadership is sorely lacking in the various agencies involved in sports.
Well again, as I have said in the past, there is hope…. but with too much effort and money thrown in for beach volleyball, one has to wonder: is this all for show?
