In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, the Silliman University Cultural Affairs Committee brings to the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium Ballet Philippines’ The Sleeping Beauty, the acclaimed ballet classic with choreography by the legendary Marius Petipa set to Peter Tchaikovsky’s music. The ballet, set on August 17 and 18, will be performed by award-winning ballerina Candice Adea as Princess Aurora and Jean Marc Cordero as the Prince.
Ballet Philippines Artistic Director Paul Alexander Morales says that the staging of a full-length version of The Sleeping Beauty has not been performed by the company in 23 years. The Luce presentation will feature Ms. Adea and Mr. Cordero, who recently brought high honors to the country by winning the gold in the women’s senior division and the Special Jury Award for Best Pas de Deux Technique, respectively, at the Helsinki International Ballet Competition, considered the international dance Olympics.
The timeless and classic fairytale production retells the story and the curse of the beautiful princess Aurora, her lilac fairies and the promise of a true love’s kiss. In the ballet, the infant Princess Aurora is christened with all the royal guests and fairies in attendance–except for the dark fairy Carabosse. She storms into the castle, furious at the royal family for not inviting her. In her spite, she marks Princess Aurora with an untimely death–that is, until the good Lilac Fairy steps in to soften the curse: that she will grow up and prick in finger on a spindle, but will instead fall into a long and deep sleep, to be awakened by the kiss of true love.
Morales and the company are also set to give simultaneous ballet workshops on August 16 at the Luce Ballet Studio and at MEV, from 2 to 5 PM. This is part of the Albert Faurot Lecture and Workshop Series for Culture and the Arts.
Tickets are now available for shows on both play dates. For August 17, theater passes are available for the 3 PM matinee, and P700, P500, and P300 tickets are available for the 8 PM gala. For August 18, theater passes are available for the 9 AM matinee, P300 tickets are available for the 3 PM matinee, and P700, P500, and P300 tickets are available for the 8 PM gala.
Season tickets are honored during the first gala show. All tickets and season passes for Luce Auditorium shows are available for sale at the College of Performing and Visual Arts building, and at the theater lobby before the show begins.
