The Department of Science & Technology has enlisted the expertise of Kawayan Collective, a bamboo supplier in the town of Dauin, to manufacture “people spacers” that will help control and regulate physical distancing in the entrances leading at the market complex in Dumaguete.
According to Public Market Administrator Engr. Ronnie Fortin, Kawayan Collective has provided the people spacers made of bamboo that have been installed in the various entrances.

Kawayan Collective proprietor Amy Ellingson-Villanueva said the bamboo barrier, a hands-free people spacer, was designed by DOST provincial director Engr. Gilbert Arbon. “He sent us a sketch for our team to assemble. After a working prototype was built, DOST purchased a second barrier for donation to the City of Dumaguete to help with the safe assembly and access to markets and services, she said.
Fortin appealed to the public to abide by the market policies to help prevent any transmission of the dreaded coronavirus, and to promote health and sanitation.
