BAYAWAN CITY–As part of the City’s pre-Charter day celebrations, the local government of Bayawan held a dance competition Dec. 18 among pupils from the various elementary schools.
The competition pitted five pairs of dancers in three Latin categories: cha-cha, samba, and jive.
The winner’s trophy was awarded to dancers from Bayawan City East Central School: Jon Emmanuel Owen Acibo, 11, and a 6th grade student, and Jen Shelby Maglangit, 9, in 4th grade. The pair, trained by Johann Kate Viola, mesmerized the crowd with their professional execution: Acibo with his snappy moves, and Maglangit, her fancy footwork.
The competition was sponsored by Bayawan’s Liga ng mga Barangay headed by its president, Severino “Tata” Capulso.
It was also made possible through the support of City Mayor Henry Pryde Teves, and Vice Mayor Ismael Martinez.
The dancesport at Hayahay Square was held on the occasion of the opening of the Bayawan Agro Trade Fair & Tilapia Festival. A portion of the three-kilometer boulevard was opened to vendors of locally-grown vegetables and root crops.
Grilled fresh tilapia from the City’s Danapa tilapia farm was also made available at reasonable prices. The Danapa tilapia farm is one of the largest of its kind in the Province, and arguably the best managed one, boasting five to seven-year-old fish as big as wash basins, kept mostly for research purposes.
Also sold at the Agro Trade Fair are local handicraft such as flower baskets, fruit baskets, laundry hampers made from nito, a vine commonly found in the mountains of Bayawan.
The program’s master of ceremonies, Matet Cañela, thanked 3rd District Cong. Arnie Teves for his overall support of the event. He also acknowledged the judges: Dr. Dan Alar, Klarisse Gargar, and Oscar Ong, the chairperson.
