Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) officials in Region 7, led by regional director Fire Sr. Supt. Ma. Luisa Hadjula, have conducted a two-day inspection of universities, schools, dormitories and boarding houses in Dumaguete to determine their compliance with the Fire Safety Code.

The inspection, held Sunday and Monday, was part of the agency’s Oplan Balik Eskwela, according to Hadjula, to ensure the fire safety of occupants, especially students.

She lauded Dumaguetenos for being conscientious in complying with requirements under the Fire Safety Code, noting that they only found minor violations during inspection, such as busted emergency lights or worn out electrical wirings.

She said her team did not find major violations that would warrant the shutting down of these businesses, unlike in Tagbilaran City, where she had recommended for the closure of a dormitory located near the University of Bohol.

However, she directed fire marshals to continue inspecting establishments believed to be illegally operating as boarding houses.

Inspections should be done year-round and not only during Oplan Balik Eskwela, she added. (PNA/Judy Flores Partlow)
