Police investigators have taken into custody the barangay captain of Mabato in the town of Ayungon, and another resident, as “persons of interest” over the “cold blooded murder” of four intelligence operatives of the Philippine National Police on Wednesday in sitio Yamot.

Police Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas, director of the Police Regional Office 7, told reporters in a press conference Friday that the barangay captain, Sunny Caldera, and a certain Victoriano Anadon both had prior knowledge of the operation of the four intelligence operatives there.

Mabato is a barangay in the mountains of Ayungon, close to the boundary with Negros Occidental.

The four police officers were earlier reported ambushed by suspected members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army on Thursday afternoon in sitio Yamot, barangay Mabato in Ayungon.

General Sinas identified the slain policemen as Police Cpl. Relebert Beronio; Pat. Raffy Callao; Pat. Roel Cabellon; and Pat. Marquino de Leon, all intelligence officers of the 704th Provincial Mobile Force Company of the Regional Public Safety Battalion 7 assigned in Negros Oriental.

He said the four intelligence operatives were on their way to verify the alleged presence of an armed group, as well as looking at “possible supporters of the NPA there”.

The resident Anadon claimed he was made to tie the hands of the policemen behind their backs, and afterwards, left the crime scene.

“We are not sure if he (Anadon) is their agent or contact,” Sinas said. “If evidence warrants it, we will be filing appropriate charges against Anadon.”

Sinas also disclosed that at least 20 households are believed to have ties with the NPA.

An earlier report said that the policemen, wearing civilian clothes and carrying service firearms, were on board motorcycles at around 2:30 p.m., and were on their way to the residence of Anadon in sitio Yamot.

Before reaching the house of Anadon, however, armed men believed to be NPA rebels intercepted the policemen.

Sinas said there are strong indications the operatives were captured, hogtied, mauled, and shot dead.

Sinas said he believes the four were victims of a “set-up” and that their movements were being monitored.

Each of the four victims bore a single gunshot wound, but also showed bruises and other wounds that had caused their deaths, he said.

The issued firearms of the victims were also taken by the perpetrators, he added.

Sinas visited the crime scene earlier that day, accompanied by Negros Oriental Provincial Police Director Col. Raul Tacaca and Ayungon Police Chief Capt. Romel Luga, as part of the ongoing investigation into the killing of the four policemen. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)
