The Bureau of Internal Revenue District Office 79 (BIR-RDO 79) based in Dumaguete City is urging taxpayers in its area of coverage, to include the provinces of Negros Oriental and Siquijor, to settle their dues on time to avoid being penalized as well as to help the office reach its target tax collection goal for 2012.

According to Cresencio Agad, BIR-RDO 79 chief, the performance rating of his office for the period from January to July this year has cumulatively exceeded its target by P14 million. He thanked the local BIR employees for working hard to achieve such goal, as well as for the cooperation of the taxpayers.

For that period, the local BIR office collected a total of P834 million as opposed to a cumulative target of P820 million for the months of January to July, this year, Agad said.

But he stressed that the month of August is critical for his office as it has the biggest monthly target tax collection goal for this year, set at P154 million. Agad said that if this goal has been met or surpassed, he is optimistic that the BIR RDO-79 will be able to reach or surpass its goal of P1.452 billion target tax collection for 2012.

The local BIR chief is hopeful that with relentless collection efforts and the support of the taxpayers, his office can reach or even exceed the remainder of the target tax collection of P618 million in the next five months until December.

Agad said the average collection target for each month until the end of the year is pegged at around P124 million.

The BIR continues to send letter notices to taxpayers to settle their dues within a 30-day grace period to avoid being penalized. In fact, what had helped the local BIR office to earn a big collection in July was the enforcement of letter notices, which he said are being sent out by the BIR central office in Metro Manila.

He appealed to taxpayers in Negros Oriental and Siquijor to settle their dues even without a letter notice from the tax agency to help the BIR achieve its target goal for this year.

The BIR RDO-79 has been consistently cited for its achievements over the past several years for being able to meet or exceed its target tax collection goal every year. (PNA) LAP/JFP
