The Provincial Census Coordinating Board recently met in preparation for the census of population and housing in May 2020.

The nationwide 2020 Census of Population and Housing will be conducted from May 20 to June 17 next year.

Provincial Statistical Officer Ariel Fortuito of the Philippine Statistics Authority said the census taking is important because this is the comprehensive data gathering on demographics and socio-economic for planning and policy making.

The collection of data will include household and housing characteristics and barangay characteristics in each barangay, municipality, city, province, and region in the country.

Fortuito appealed to the public to support the census enumerators who will go house to house in May 2020.

“If there will be census enumerators who will knock on your doors, please answer the different questions honestly and patiently. It is important that we answer with the correct data because this is really needed for government to be able to make policies and programs to help in solving the different social problems,” the PSA officer said.

Under the law, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72, May is the prescribed month to conduct surveys ending in “zero.”

In compliance with the law, all public school teachers are mandated to conduct the survey for next year’s census.

With this, the census has to be conducted during summer vacation when public teachers are not attending to their classes.

However, Fortuito said if there is a lack of teachers, PSA will hire enumerators in order to cover the entire 557 barangays in the province.

The survey also includes the non-economic indicators such as names, ages, sex, population, and housing characteristics in the demographics to determine who is the poorest of the poor, said Fortuito.

“While for socio-economic indicators, the questions on the different jobs that they have, their health and sanitation, their sources of water, their food, and how they cook it,” he added.
