Fishermen on Wednesday plucked out of the Siquijor waters four crewmen and the boat captain of the ill-fated Delta 1 fast craft, which sank Tuesday afternoon while seeking shelter at the height of Typhoon Pablo’s fury.
The executive officer of the Siquijor Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council , Arturo Pacatang, was quoted by the state run Philippine Information Agency as saying that the crewmen of the Delta 1 were brought to the Siquijor Provincial Hospital for checkup.
Two of them were brought to Dumaguete City Wednesday morning for further treatment.
The captain of the ship, Neil Abe, was rescued hours later also by fishermen, according to Monet Raymundo, operations manager of Delta Fastferry Corporation. Raymundo said their bigger fast craft, the Delta 2, was able to seek shelter at Santander, Cebu.
Gerald Dominguez, the chairman of the Siquijor PDRRMC transport committee, said they are saddened to learn of the tragedy that befel Delta 1, because it was really serving the people of Siquijor.
Delta Fastferries Corporation also lost its floating dock and passenger terminal in Dumaguete City after the strong waves and winds broke the terminal free from its moorings and dragged it right next to the Rizal Boulevard, right next to Silliman University.
Raymundo said they will have to have the terminal repaired at a nearby dry dock facility before they open it to the public, even as passenger service between Dumaguete and Siquijor may resume very soon.
Meanwhile, a cargo boat MV Euro belonging to the Villa Shipping Corporation also sank near Maria town in Siquijor after seeking shelter from Typhoon Pablo.
