Education Sec. Leonor Magtolis-Briones met with officials from the Dumaguete City government, the Negros Oriental provincial government, and the Philippine Sports Commission to get updates in the preparations for the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Schools Games slated in November 2020 to be hosted by the City and the Province.

In the meeting, Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo reiterated his assurance that the City government is ready to perform its responsibilities as host, in partnership with the provincial government under Gov. Roel Degamo.

He said that local committees have been formed to directly coordinate with their counterparts in the national agencies.

Mayor Remollo stressed the City is optimistic of providing security to the nearly 3,000 athletes and their officials from the ASEAN member-countries with the installation and operation of 336 modern CCTV cameras; adequate hotel accommodations; efficient communication and transportation systems with the entry of Pedi-Grab; and the availability of more domestic flights.

The City and Provincial governments have been able to get financial support from the Philippine Sports Commission for the upgrade of various sports venues to international competition standards.

The 12th edition of the ASEAN Schools Games next year here in Negros Oriental is the largest annual sports tournament for senior high and college students from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Timor Leste, Brunei Darussalam, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia. They will compete in athletics, swimming, badminton, volleyball, sepak takraw, table tennis, and basketball. (PIO)
