Ten farmers’ wives, who were taught the techniques of cooking brown rice, and exposed to various recipes as early as November last year battled it out for the best brown rice main dish in the Rice is Life Cookfest held Jan. 29.
The choice main ingredients for this year’s contest were brown rice and organic coconut sugar for dessert.
Included on the table that day of the contest at Robinsons Place were shrimps, pork cutlets, and a vast array of fruits and vegetables.
The tandem of Joy Mira and Josephine Cabrera were declared champions. They were each given kitchen utility sets and equipment.
The runners-up and non-winners also received some kitchen utensils.
The cookfest was inspired by the hit reality TV series Masterchef, where the contestants — from Azagra and Palangoyan in Tanjay City — are given a list of ingredients they can use to concoct certain dishes.
The College of Hospitality Management held the cookfest in partnership with the Philippine Rice Research Institute.
The RIL Cookfest aimed to educate the public on rice conservation initiatives and awareness programs under PhilRice’s BeRiceponsible Campaign. (Febby Rule)
