The Province of Negros Oriental celebrates Buglasan Festival in two ways, cultural and sports.
In the olden times, the island of Negros was referred to as Buglas, after the tall reeds that were predominant in the area. A map said to have been drawn by Diego Lope Povedano dated 1572 shows an island named Buglas Insulis. The Buglasan Festival is named after Negros Island’s beginnings.
Buglasan was dormant for many years until 1990, when it was revived as part of Negros Oriental’s centennial as a province. Buglasan was applied to the entire celebration and the most awaited event in Negros Oriental every October, the Buglasan Festival, which was revived in 2001, is celebrated annually in October in the provincial capital of Dumaguete and is hailed as Negros Oriental’s “festival of festivals”.
In 2012, NOSDEP organized the Negros Oriental Sports Confederation, an event management group composed of different sports managers who shall assist NOSDEP in carrying-out its functions and conduct athletic trainings, seminars for coaches, trainors, and officials. (PR)
