As part of the Governor’s Sports Festival, Buglasan Athletics was held this past October 14-15. This event was a first for the area, as only junior and senior high school athletes competed. Aside from the different athletic events, for the first time mixed relays were introduced. Thus, in the 4×100 and the 4×400 meter relays, each team had 2 male and 2 female participants.

Schools from throughout Negros Oriental sent their teams to compete. Twenty-two gold medals were up for grabs. Presbyterian Theological School or ‘PTC’ garnered 13 golds. Negros Oriental High school took 8 golds and Pamplona grabbed one gold.

Outstanding performances were turned in by PTC’s Reyshel Queding and Jayson Padayao, each taking 3 individual gold medals. In the mixed relays, PTC won the 4×100 and Negros Oriental High won the 4×400.

Crowned overall champion in the male and female competition was Presbyterian Theological School.

This event hopefully will be the start of something greater in the world of athletics here in the province. In past regional meets, we haven’t performed very well. In fact, it has been dismal.

Also, this December an organizational meeting will be held for athletic coaches and others interested in improving the sport. The idea is to pattern the organization after the Diamond Athletic League, which concentrates on athletics. The Philippines is referred to as the Pearl of the Orient, thus an idea is to call it the ‘Pearl Athletic League’ or ‘PAL’.

Well, for now we can only dream, try, hope and of course pray.
