Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo vows that the present open dump site in Barangay Candau-ay will be closed to be followed by rehabilitation. He stressed that the sanitary landfill must be located outside the city considering that there is no more space available within the territory.
“I have asked the assistance of our neighboring mayors to help us look for an ideal site for the sanitary landfill by pooling together our resources under the Metro Dumaguete concept to responsibly and lawfully dispose our solid wastes,” Remollo stressed.
Mayor Remollo has secured the support of his fellow mayors namely Edgar Teves of Valencia, Jose Abierra of Sibulan, Mel Nick Logronio of San Jose, Jocelyn Alviola of Bacong, Neil Credo of Dauin and Glenson Alanano of Zamboanguita in searching for a suitable sanitary landfill that will comply with the standards of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
There are four possible sites under consideration by a joint team composed of the mayors, concerned ENR officers, geologists and engineers, two of which have already been inspected.
Of the sites, the one located in Timbao, Bacong is the biggest spanning 48 hectares, but it is some 20 kilometers away from the national highway and about 860 feet above sea level.
Another site that was already visited was situated in Barangay Malaunay, it is an 8.1 property that is almost 25 kilometers from Valencia town proper.
Next to be inspected are proposed sites in Barangay Dobdob Valencia and Barangays Calabnugan or Pansil in Sibulan.
DENR requires a landfill to be at least 5 kilometers in size and must be located in an area that is not susceptible to landslides or flash floods. (City PIO)
