Canlaon City in Negros Oriental is developing a “Cash-for-Work” program for residents displaced by the Dec. 9 eruption of Mount Kanlaon.
“I’ve seen how the evacuation has disrupted lives,” Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas said Tuesday. “It’s not just about being away from home; it’s about losing jobs, routines, and normalcy.”
“I know how hard it is to worry about both safety and putting food on the table.”
Mayor Cardenas said the program would allow people to earn money while helping the community recover.
Edna Masicampo, Canlaon City information officer-designate, said hiring, which will prioritize evacuees, will likely begin in February.
The number of people to be hired will be determined after the local government validates those staying in evacuation centers or with relatives.
As of Jan. 17, some 1,299 families or 4,186 individuals are temporarily living in eight evacuation centers.
Some 728 families or 2,287 persons are staying with relatives.
Cardenas said the program will provide immediate support, while allowing people to maintain their dignity and self-reliance.
He called on agencies and officials to support the program.
“Together, we can make sure that even in tough times, we take care of each other,” Cardenas said.
“To everyone affected: I see you, I hear you, and I’m committed to helping. We’ll get through this together.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Cardenas assured the public of transparency and accountability in handling operations in response to the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.
The Mayor welcomed independent investigations, and emphasized that the Incident Management System meticulously records all transactions and financial activities related to disaster response efforts.
“We understand the concerns raised regarding the expenses and assistance provided in response to the Mt. Kanlaon incident. Transparency and accountability remain at the forefront of our operations”, Cardenas said in a press statement Wednesday.
He emphasized that a dedicated Finance section tracks all funding sources, donations, and expenditures.
A detailed transparency report on resource allocation is available for public review.
He urged those with inquiries to contact the Finance section directly.
The statement comes as certain quarters questioned where and how the funds and donations are being spent.
Despite this, Mayor Cardenas maintained that through their collective efforts, Canlaon City has kept zero casualties during this challenging time. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)
