The College of Arts and Sciences, together with the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts, celebrated September 1-30, 2015 the CAS and DAFA Month with the theme “Strengthening the Culture of Excellence through Unity and Innovation”.
The College of Arts and Sciences Student Guild, together with its sub-organizations, prepared activities that would highlight the disciplines under the College of Arts and Sciences, together with the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts.
The month-long celebration started with a Eucharistic Celebration at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall and was followed by an Opening Salvo in front of the Flores Hall.
Different disciplines under the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts participated in the yell competition. The winners are: Broadcast Communication Society, 3rd place; Fine Arts Society, 2nd place; and, UAPSA-FU Chapter, 1st place.
Also, the College of Arts and Sciences Student Guild and Political Science Society sponsored two major University convocations for the month-long celebration. These are the “Voter’s Education Convocation “ last September 2, at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall with Atty. Gildu Agoncillo and Teresa Tejero as the resource speakers, and the “One Island; One Region” Convocation last September 29 at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall with Dr. Henry A. Sojor as the resource speaker.
The different sub-organizations under the College of Arts and Sciences together with the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts also sponsored various events. The Arts in English Major Society organized the University English Spelling Bee, which was participated in by the different colleges of Foundation University with the following winners: School of Industrial Engineering and Technology, 3rd place; College of Nursing, 2nd place; and, College of Business Administration, 1st place. The UAPSA-FU backed the 2015 “Arckilympics” held at the FU Green with the following winners: College of Education, 3rd place; School of Industrial Engineering and Technology, 2nd place; and, College of Criminology, 1st place. The Broadcast Communication Society showcased their ability and expertise on creating short films and documentaries through a two-day Audio-Visual Presentation of their works at the James B. Herring AVR, with different schools invited to witness their activity. The Fine Arts Society made a barrage of their artistic works using unconventional media in the “Sunod-Sulog 2015” held at the Flores Hall Ground Floor. A week-long celebration of the Science Week Celebration was organized by the Biological Society in cooperation with the Gen. Sci. majors Society from the College of Education. The Math Society sponsored the “Matholympics” with the FUHS Students as the participants. One of the most awaited event during the CAS and DAFA Month was the CAS Night with the theme “CAS goes Boho”, held September 26 at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall.
The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts not only have scholastic activities and outdoor activities but also conducted a tree planting activity at the FU Demo Farm in Amlan and a Feeding Program at the Sto. Niño Orphanage. This is also a way of improving the students’ sense of social responsibility.
The CAS and DAFA Month celebration is an avenue for the students to showcase and involve themselves in activities that would help them improve and grow. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts really showed what they are made of and what they can possibly do. (Ivan Cordevilla)
