Cebuano tops Sibulan Fiesta Chess tournament

Cebu City woodpusher, Edsel Montoya, emerged the champion of the Sibulan Fiesta Open Non-Master Chess Tournament held June 6 and 7 at the Sibulan Plaza.

Montoya bested other 90 chess aspirants coming from Negros, Cebu, Bohol and Dipolog City.

Montoya received a cash prize of P7,000 and a trophy. Second place went to Bacolod’s, Ted Ian Montoyo, who won P5,000 and a trophy. NORSU Varsity chess player Adrian Dela Cruz, won P2,000 for the 3rd prize.

Other winners from fourth to tenth place were Danny Mangao, Egay Conjuico, Raymond Dela Pena, Allan Salientes, Michael Joseph Pagaran, Bon Tibod and Genesis Borromeo.

Special awards were given to top female player Sara Francine Olendo, top kiddie Alfonso Louis Olendo, Romualdo Catequista-Top Sibulan Player, Jayvee Basas-Promising Sibulan player, Lance Nathaniel Orlina-Top under player, Ben Enrique Jariol-Top Jr Sibulan player, Rey Anthony Divinagracia-Promising Kiddie Sibulan, Syril Repe -Most Improved Player, Khay Zoila Sonjaco-Top Jr female and Arleah Cassandra Sapuan-Top under female.

Sibulan Vice-Mayor Jose Abiera handed over the cash prizes and trophies to the winners during the closing ceremonies.

The said activity was initiated by the Sibulan Chess Corner headed by Al Dumalag, NOSDEP, Negros Club 64 and Sibulan Officials lead by Sibulan Mayor Maning Diputado. (SGR)
