It’s that time of year again when the Negros Oriental Medical Society joins the Philippine Medical Association in a nationwide celebration of Medicine Week from Sept. 23 to Oct. 1.

This year’s theme is PMA: Haligi at Ilaw ng Pangkalahatang Kalusugan and it will be the 60th Medicine Week Celebration from the time President Elpidio Quirino mandated it in September 1957 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 439.

The NOMS celebration kicked off with an inter-high school essay writing and poster making contests that were held Sept. 23 at the Silliman University Medical School Physicians’ Hall.

The next activity was the ceremonial wreath-laying at the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal at Quezon Park. This wreath laying is done simultaneously nationwide by all local medical societies to honor our national hero who was also a physician, and to remind every PMA member about the nobility of being a doctor, and the responsibilities of being a doctor in the Philippines.

The wreath laying was followed by a breakfast fellowship at Sans Rival Bistro along the boulevard.

Monday, Sept. 25 will be PMA Earth Day and Dr. Kenneth Coo will conduct a lecture on Disaster Preparedness at the Dumaguete City High School at 8:30 am.

The next activity will be on Friday, Sept. 29 with a lecture by Dr. Stephanie Eloisa Miaco on Dementia to be held at the Office of Senior Citizens’ Affairs beside the SU Ballfield.

There will also be a blood screening activity at 9 am, dedicated to the senior citizens.

The culminating event will be a Fun Run which NOMS is co-sponsoring with the Department of Trade & Industry on Sunday, Oct. 1. Assembly time will be at 5:30 am at the Rizal Boulevard.

The new set of NOMS officers are inviting and encouraging all NOMS members to actively participate in events. The newly-inducted NOMS officers: President Dr. Mansueto Gumban III, Vice-President Dr. Gamaliel Garcia, Secretary Dr. Stephanie Eloisa Miaco, Treasurer Dr. Jenellie Faith Bomediano, PRO Dr. Clemente Hipe IV.

Composing the Board of Directors are Dr. Daryl Aplaon, Dr. Marie Julien Hitosis, Dr. Edgardo Pialago, Dr. Ana Marie Yap, Dr. Krypton Kho as immediate past president, and yours truly.
