Gov. Chaco Sagarbarria has lauded the Department of Education for the improvements introduced by its leaders in Negros Oriental.
In a speech during Friday’s Tribute Gala for former superintendents and assistant superintendents in Negros Oriental, Sagarbarria said the mode of teaching has greatly improved in the last 20 years that he had been observing its performance as a public servant.
The Governor was speaking during the DepEd’s celebration of its 123rd founding anniversary which also coincided with the launching of the daily feeding program for learners.
“When I go to the mountains, I can now see three-storey school buildings,” he said.
He said during the incumbency of his father, 2nd District Cong. Chiquiting Sagarbarria, the DepEd was given funds to build over 100 schoolbuildings in the Province.
He said the mode of teaching was also put to a test during the pandemic, which resulted in a mixed mode of instruction known as online mode, and the use of learning modules.
Governor Sagarbarria also said he has noted that DepEd officials who are working with the DepEd family in Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City tend to rise to higher positions in the Region and in the country.
“We have even produced a Secretary of Education in the person of Sec. Leonor Magtolis-Briones. I believe this came about not by luck but by the strong foundation that was laid down in the schools in the Province,” he said.
He said Dumaguete may be widely known as a University City because of the presence of institutions of quality learning, and that he would want this brand to extend to the Province of Negros Oriental.
“My dream is to make Negros Oriental a ‘University Province’ and I would need everyone’s help to make this a reality,” he said.
The Tribute Gala and launching of the Daily Feeding Program was a brainchild of Schools Division Supt. Neri Ojastro. It was attended by former superintendents and family representatives of the deceased school leaders. (AP)
