Silliman qualified for autonomous status, along with four other universities in Central Visayas: Cebu Institute of Technology University, University of San Carlos, University of San Jose–Recoletos, and the University of Visayas.
CMO No. 6 2023 outlines the benefits of private higher education institutions with autonomous status, including: exemption from the issuance of Special Order for the graduates, exemption from regular monitoring and evaluation, authority to grant honorary degrees to deserving individuals, priority in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives, priority to CHED support for the establishment of linkages with recognized foreign schools, the privilege to offer new undergraduate programs (not for distance education) without securing permits, the privilege to determine and prescribe their curriculum programs, the privilege to offer extension classes, priority in the processing of application for new graduate programs, and the privilege to increase tuition and other school fees without securing CHED permit.
This cycle of autonomous grants reflects the performance and achievements of the institution from July 2019 to September 2023. The newly-awarded autonomous status is valid for three years, or until Sept. 15, 2027. (SU Media Affairs)
