The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly called Mormons, launched Friday the Dumaguete Stake Self-Reliance Center.

John John Gequinto, Second Councilor of the Dumaguete Stake, said the Dumaguete Self-Reliance Center is committed to actively raise the quality of life for everyone, regardless of race or circumstance to achieve their full potential.

The mission is to provide practical, step by step assistance to everyone to become self reliant which also means provident living, Geguinto said.

Also, Rogelio Montemayor, chairman of the Dumaguete Stake Self-Reliance Center, said the center provides career workshops and self employment workshops for members of the church and people living in the city.

The volunteers in the center contact members who have registered on ldsjobs.org to help them create a profile that can be viewed by potential employers.

Volunteers also help those who are applying for loans from the Perpetual Education Fund. The Stake Self-reliance Committees identify members in need and assist them with one of the three legs of self-reliance namely: Education, Jobs, or Self-employment.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria lauded the effort of the leaders of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, saying the initiative will help gain employment for the members and other sectors of the society.

He further said the city government will continue to support any activity by any religious groups in the city.

Angelo Tiongson, executive assistant of Gov. Roel Degamo, also delivered an inspirational message of the province’s chief executive. (PNA/JFP)
