The Roman Catholic Bishop of San Carlos City said the barbaric deaths of the educators Arthur Cordevilla and his sister Andale, of Romeo Alipan, the barangay chairman of barangay Buenavista in Guihulngan, the shooting of Raklin Astorias of Maloh, Siaton and the killing of Reden Elesterio of Ayungon, all happening in one day, are manifestations of a total absence of peace and order.

In a strongly worded pastoral appeal, Bishop Gerardo Alminaza called on the leaders of Guihulngan City and of Negros Oriental to speak up. “Let not your silence add to more killings. Let not your silence embolden more criminals. Be bold and join us in the cry to end the senseless killings!” he said.

The Bishop called on the police and military to protect and people and not instill fear.

Bishop Gerardo Alminaza asked the Roman Catholic Churches in his diocese to toll their bells at 8 p.m. every day until the killings stop.

The Diocese of San Carlos covers the northeastern portion of Negros Island which includes the Negros Oriental cities of Canlaon, and Guihulngan and the Municipality of Vallehermoso.

Meanwhile, Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortes expressed sorrow over the violence that has affected Negros Oriental.

He said the killings, which took place in Siaton, Guihulngan, Bindoy, Ayungon and Manjuyod, is a result of the armed conflict between the government troops and the NPA militants.

Bishop Cortes expressed hope that the leaders of both sides of the armed conflict will experience conversion, come to the negotiating table and listen to each other sincerely and commit to the cessation of conflict based on the common good.

Meanwhile, Rev. Ed Samson, conference minister of the Negros District Conference United Church of Christ in the Philippines, asked all local churches to place a black cloth on their chancels or hang a black cloth within the church vicinity “to express our sadness and disgust over the deaths of many people here in our island within these past few days.”

He said we all want change but not at the expense of devaluing any Filipino Negrense life.

He called on the military and the New Peoples Army to participate in a peaceful solution to address this crisis. “I believe you are both for the welfare of all people, just like us in the church. We are all Filipinos and we are supposed to love one another,” he said.
