The Dumaguete City Fire Department has recorded three fires in the City last month, which incidentally was Fire Prevention Month, causing damage estimated at P48,000.{{more}}

City Arson Investigator Ranulfo Abines said these fires occurred at two hotels and at one house which resulted from electrical misuse.

Abines said one hotel caught fire because of an overheated airconditioner while another hotel had a defective circuit breaker. The third fire, which hit a house along the Carlos Gothong Avenue was caused by a loose connection in its service drop wire.

Abines said other examples of misuse of electricity are illegal tapping and “flying” connections, wherein a single house can be a source of electricity for several houses.

Abines said that last year’s fire damage during Fire Prevention Month was much lower than of this year’s, as March 2010 came and went with only a burned banana cue stall, causing damage worth P1,200.

Abines said the BFP conducts year-round fire prevention awareness campaigns in the elementary and high schools and establishments.

The fire official also reminded the public to keep burning candles and gas lanterns away from paper, curtains and other flammable materials, particularly during brown-outs.

He also advised building owners to have at least one fire extinguisher to ensure the immediate suppression of fire incidents. (PIA NegOr/JCT)
