The local government of Dumaguete City got assistance from Smart Communications, Inc. as it gears up for the City’s Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Program. The City received rain gauges for eight public schools that are participating in Smart’s Project Rain Gauge.
The rain gauges were turned-over to school officials of Camanjac National High School, Taclobo High School, Junob National High School, Dumaguete City National High School, RTPM-Dumaguete Science High School, Hermenigilda Gloria Memorial High School, Piapi High School, Maxino College, St. Paul University, and the local PAGASA office.
As an outcome of the rainfall monitoring training held last year, the schools that participated in the Project Rain Gauge were provided with the tools to better prepare them to respond during flash floods.
The City has experienced flash floods when continuous and heavy rainfall resulted in the overflowing of the Banica and Okoy rivers, causing extensive damage to life and property.
The Corporate Network for Disaster Response of Smart in coordination with the city government also conducted a community-based disaster management for all the members of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.
Some 35 local officials from barangays Taclobo, Canfau-ay, Bagacay, Poblacion8, Tabuctubig, Calindagan, Tinago, Cantil-e, Cadawinonan, Camanjac, Looc, Piapi, and Bantayan are now guided on community risk assessment; risk, resources and hazard mapping and the drafting of their respective contingency plans.
