The City of Dumaguete was proud to host the “9th NATIONAL VEGETABLES’ CONGRESS” which was attended by Regions 1-10 in the entire archipelago. Delegates from the different parts of the country started to arrive Wednesday August 3, 2011 and made a tour in Valencia, Negros Oriental to observe our Vegetable Farming and in some areas of interest in our city. Right after their touring activity, the City Government of Dumaguete, through the able leadership of Mayor Manuel T. Sagarbarria sponsored a Fellowship Dinner and a Welcome Party to all delegates held at Mariant Hall Cathedral in which participants were all delighted to the sumptuous meal being prepared for them and all were grateful to the Mayor’s gestures of hospitality.

The theme for this year’s 9th National Vegetables Congress is “SAFE AND QUALITY VEGETABLES: KEY TO SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH” provides us an understanding that the only way to produce safe and quality vegetables, is to grasp and apply the so-called organic farming which is chemical & artificial fertilizer free, at the same time, to create a culture of a vegetable-loving communities with advocacies on vegetable cultivation, culinary arts specializing vegetable recipes and the promotion of having vegetables in every meal in order to attain optimum health among our people.

Back to the scriptures in the Holy Bible, God’s prescriptions for the meat of mankind are fruits, nuts, grains, legumes and vegetables. The all-knowing God and creator of man has designed our hands for picking fruits of various kinds and for planting and harvesting vegetables of any kind as well, and our teeth for eating only what He has prescribed, while He designs the teeth of the lions, tigers, and other carnivorous mammals to devour flesh and even their hands having claws, to catch their prey.

Having this 9th National Congress here in Dumaguete City and in the Province of Negros Oriental, the expected result or output of this congress is that all Dumagueteños and all Negreneses would be more health-conscious living a healthy lifestyle and promoting the cultivation of vegetables and making them our daily food in order to obtain optimum health, happiness, and successful life.
