The proposed budget of Dumaguete City for next year 2020 will be significantly higher at P 925 million compared to P 790 million in 2019.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said that the strength of the local economy as evidenced by the increasing number of business establishments from just 9, 606 in 2016 to more than 10, 522 last year is a testament to the positive investor climate in the city.

This explains why for the past three years, the City’s Treasury Department has posted excess collections particularly from locally generated revenues.

Mayor Remollo stressed that the correct and prompt payment of taxes by the citizens is a manifestation of their trust in the administration that these funds will be translated to more and better delivery of basic social services particularly to the marginalized.

True enough, unlike many cities and municipalities in the region, Dumaguete City is not dependent on its share from the Internal Revenue Allotment derived from the national taxes.

For 2020, IRA accounts 57% representing P 528.9 million of the estimated income while 43% or P 396 million would come from locally generated revenues.

Among the major expenditures of the proposed budget in 2020 are: P 369 million will be for the payment of salaries, wages and other benefits for the employees of the City Government; almost P 200 million will be allocated for infrastructure projects; nearly P 108 million will be for social services; P 71 million is allotted for health services; P 11. 2 million is for sports and education; P 46.2 million is earmarked for the mandatory 5% Local Risk Reduction and Management Fund and a similar amount will be appropriated for Gender and Development or GAD.

The proposed budget will be presented and deliberated before the members of the City Council for authorization.

Mayor Remollo stressed that the proposed budget will finance the infrastructure projects to build roads, evacuation centers, covered courts, bridges, closure of the dumpsite, establishment of the sanitary landfill and MRF, full operation of the CCTV system, traffic lights, among other projects.

The administration assures that it will continue to practice sound fiscal management, good housekeeping and ethical conduct in service in order for the officials and employees to retain the trust of the people and so they will cooperate in building a progressive, healthier and safer community.
