The City of Dumaguete has commended this paper, the Dumaguete MetroPost, for its recent award as the country’s Best Edited Weekly Community Newspaper, and Best in Photojournalism by the Philippine Press Institute, during the 2021 Community Press Awards.
The Resolution of Commendation and Honor for the MetroPost, authored by Councilors Agustin Miguel Perdices, Joe Kenneth Arbas, Bernice Anne Elmaco, and Rosel Margarette Erames, and seconded by Councilor Lani Ramon, was unanimously approved at the Dumaguete City Council during their Jan. 26 regular session.
The Resolution cited the newspaper’s accomplishments that were recognized nationally in the past years since 2007, leading up to last year’s two awards.
The MetroPost was cited by the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) for its “breadth of issues of big impact to the community, with stories across different sections written in crisp, clear and concise language.”
The PPI, the national association of newspapers, also recognized the MetroPost’s “strong coverage on the CoViD-19 pandemic…and its opinion section featured a variety of voices. Its editorials were very nuanced and well thought-out, particularly on the pandemic response…”
The City Council Resolution said it recognizes home-grown institutions like the Dumaguete MetroPost that has continued through the years to empower the people with accurate information to help them make well-informed decisions.
The Resolution of Commendation and Honor, signed by the members of the Council and by Mayor Felipe Remollo, was presented during the Council’s Feb. 9 regular session.
In his acceptance speech, MetroPost publisher Alex Pal thanked the City for this rare honor, and highlighted the role of community journalists for their efforts to inform the public to help them make decisions on everyday matters affecting their lives, as well as the City’s welfare.
