The Dumaguete City government, through the City Nutrition Council, culminated the Nutrition Month Celebration with a Food Fair 2013 and awarding of winners at the Quezon Park.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria cut the ceremonial ribbon made from local vegetables to open the Food Fair 2013. With him were City Administrator William Ablong and City Nutrition Officer Lourdes Taburaza.

In his message, the Mayor said City government will continue its efforts to promote organic farming, and to provide them with the so-called Microbial Treated Supplement (MTS) fertilizers which will result in increased production.

Sagarbarria has also issued a directive to the City Agriculturist to start the propagation of wheat and barley in all the barangays of Dumaguete, citing their nutritional benefits. Seedlings are now available in the market.

This project was started by former Vice Gov. Apolinario Arnaiz Jr., who had distributed juicers in different barangays all over the Province.

Aside from the free MTS fertilizer, the City is implementing the Plow Now-Pay Later scheme by acquiring two tractors. Next year, an additional tractor will be acquired to augment the existing tractors for farmers’ use. Farmers provide the oil, the Mayor said.
