Dumaguete City Councilor Manny Arbon is proposing a color-coding scheme for tricycles in order to ease traffic congestion in the City.
In a public hearing last Friday of the Committee on Peace and Order, Transportation & Traffic, Arbon said he has consulted some tricycle drivers about his idea and he has gotten several positive responses.
“We could have seven different colors of tricycles in Dumaguete and one type of color will have a day off one day every week,” Arbon said.
Businessman Arthur Chua lauded the suggestion, saying this was actually being done in Dipolog City.
However, LTO Dumaguete Chief Roland Ramos said the proposal might encounter opposition from the tricycle drivers. He instead proposed an 0dd-Even scheme, whereby tricycles take turns in serving areas outside of the commercial district.
He also questioned why tricycles from the neighboring towns of Sibulan, Valencia and Bacong are allowed to pick up passengers in Dumaguete City. “These tricycles have no franchise in Dumaguete and when they enter the City, they violate their franchise,” Ramos said.
Ramos said the LTO Dumaguete Office is ready to help implement whatever law is passed by the City Council.
