Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction Management training was held last April 6, 7, & 8, 2011 at South Sea Hotel Bantayan, Dumaguete City. It was a three-day training seminar. It was made possible thru a joint effort between Smart Telecommunications Group and LGU-Dumaguete City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.

It was being attended by Barangay Officials and particularly those who live in areas that are disaster risk prone. SMART Group was being represented by NN Navarro, Hilda Cleofe, Cedric Daep and Mae Garcia while CDCC Coordinator Mr. Randy Saldua and CPDO Coordinator Engr. Josephine M. Antonio represented the Dumaguete City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.

The training objectives were the ff:

To formalize the structure of CBRRMC based on the newly approved law on Disaster Risk Management (RA10121).

To come up with the hazards, capacities, and vulnerabilities assessment for Dumaguete City.

To come up with Risk Resources Map for Dumaguete City.

To come up with the plans and programs for the City Disaster Risk Management Office.

To enhance the skills of CDRRMC on Contingency Planning and Project Proposal Development.

Mr. William E. Ablong, City Administrator formally opened the training with his welcome address and opening remarks. He pointed out three vital issues in his message. First, he stressed that being prepared to any disaster is a personal matter. While we prepare for it collectively, the fact remains that it is our personal obligation to spare our families from any untoward incidents. Secondly, he stressed that we must continue in our efforts to plant trees, yet we have to be selective of its variety and continue to prune rotten branches for it may cause lives as it falls indiscriminately.

Mr. Ablong also mentioned that the Hon. City Mayor wanted to be with the said training but due to some important commitments in Manila, he was not able to make it. However, Mr. Ablong added that the Hon. Mayor is on the right direction in the City Disaster Preparedness Program. He has proven it by the upgrading of our drainange in the city and the repair of the damaged dike in Purok Valtimar Brgy Taclobo.
