DAUIN — In a simple ceremony on a drizzling afternoon last Oct. 5, representatives from the Rotary Club Dumaguete South, Department of Science & Technology, Algorithm Computer Services, Department of Education-Negros Oriental Division, Magsaysay Elementary School, MES Parents-Teachers-Community Association, and Barangay Magsaysay launched the computer laboratory project at that school.

Highlighting the affair was the signing of a memorandum of agreement between RCDS and MES-PTCA, and the hands-on introduction of the excited pupils to the computers.

The project involved the deployment of 45 desktop computers installed with open source software and the training of teachers on computer applications. RCDS provided the equipment procured with funds from Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and Rotary Club of Park Cities, Dallas.

DOST and Algorithm provided technical assistance and project management support. Magsaysay ES, the PTCA and the barangay provided the other components, such as the room, electrical system, furniture, and teachers.

The “Computers for Elementary Schools” project was conceptualized jointly by Rotarian and then Peace Corps Volunteer Bud Naifeh and the DOST a few years ago. The concept was initially piloted in an urban setting, at North City Elementary School in Piapi, Dumaguete City. (Gilbert Arbon)
