An anti-death penalty advocate of the Diocese of Dumaguete is urging lawmakers to pass a law that will strengthen family relationships, saying parents should guide and teach children the right way to prepare for their future.
George Gilvero of the Couples for Christ and chair of the Family Week Steering Committee of Dumaguete City, said late Monday that he is opposed to the implementation of the death penalty in the country.
He said the death penalty does not prevent or reduce criminality.
Gilvero added that to help solve criminality, the home needs to protect and strengthen the basic unit of society, which is the family.
As chairperson of the Family Steering Committee of the city, Gilvero said he and its members continue to discuss and find ways to address the strengthening of the family, but one week of activities is not enough for education and information dissemination.
Lawmakers should pass a law not only focused on killing people engaged in drugs, but pass a law that strengthens family relationships, he pointed out.
According to Gilvero, the roots of crimes include injustice, inequality, poverty, lack of access to food, education, jobs and housing, drugs, pornography and many others.
The training and discipline of a child starts with the family to protect and prevent the child from engaging in criminal offenses, Gilvero added. (PNA/jfp/Syril Repe)
