Next year’s scheduled barangay elections may be postponed.
Cong. Manuel Sagarbarria said several congressmen have already filed resolutions to postpone the barangay elections following the President’s directive.
“This is very clear following the pronouncement of President Duterte in his recent State of the Nation Address,” Sagarbarria told a news conference in Dumaguete City last week.
However, Sagarbarria said it is still not known when the barangay elections will be held. “It could be in 2022 or it could go up to 2024.”
Congressman Sagarbarria said given the work load given by the Department of Interior & Local Government to barangay officials, all the barangay officials can do during their first year is to attend one seminar after the other.
“There is no time for action. But with the postponement of the barangay elections, barangay officials can start working for their barangays,” he said.

Meanwhile, Congresman Sagarbarria welcomed the appointment of former Negros Oriental PNP Provincial Director Brig. Gen. Omar Buenafe as the new OIC of the Bureau of Corrections, replacing ousted BuCor Director-General Nicanor Faeldon.
Buenafe, who holds the position of Assistant Secretary, was appointed Friday by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
The Congressman said that he expects General Buenafe to do a good job at the Bureau of Corrections, considering his sterling performance in the military, which started in Negros Oriental when he was a 2nd lieutenant fresh out of the Philippine Military Academy in 1986 until his retirement as Philippine National Police regional director of the Bicol Region last year.
