The University of the Philippines-Visayas through the Philippine Genome Center-Visayas, and Silliman University are organizing the Conservation Genomics Colloquium on Tuesday, April 15 to highlight a recent breakthrough on the generation of a draft genome of the endangered Visayan Spotted Deer (Rusa alfredi).
The milestone provides insights into the genetic diversity of Rusa alfredi, and can inform strategies for captive-breeding and long-term survival.
The colloquium will also showcase other significant conservation initiatives both by Silliman and UP Visayas – Philippine Genome Center aimed at preserving biodiversity, and protecting endangered species across various ecosystems.
Conservation genomics is a rapidly-evolving field that applies genetic technologies to biodiversity preservation, species management, and ecosystem sustainability. By understanding the genetic makeup of endangered species, researchers can develop more effective conservation strategies, and mitigate the impacts of environmental changes.
The conservation genomics seminar will be held at the MBA Conference Room of the SU College of Business Administration. (SU Media & Public Affairs)
