Vice Mayor Alan Gel Cordova and City Administrator William Ablong joined students, teachers and administrators of Foundation University in the Quarter Marathon Walk (QMW) last Saturday around Robinson’s Mall Dumaguete.
The QMW, which was started two years ago as a requirement for physical education students, has grown to encompass greater aspiration than just a promotion of walking as a lifetime exercise for wellness.
Dr. Aparicio Mequi, director of the Institute of Youth Sports for Peace said that the QMW is now being utilized to campaign for the creation of walkable communities not only in Dumaguete but in the Province of Negros Oriental.
“This is a world-wide movement, which we in FU, appear to be concerned about and lead in academe-based advocacy,” he said.
Under the FU program, students are required to walk one QMW every year so that by the time they graduate, they shall have walked or ran the equivalent of a full marathon.
Before the start of the QMW at 6 a.m., Cordova and Ablong lauded the efforts of FU to promote wellness through many activities in the City and Province.
