Crime down 18 % in 2023

The number of crime incidents in Dumaguete City has declined by 18% in 2023 compared to Calendar Year 2022 attributed to the enhanced operations by the Philippine National Police, City Government and other law enforcement agencies.

In his report to the recent City Peace and Order Council, City Chief-of-Police Lt. Col. Ronoel Fungo disclosed that there were a total of 669 crime incidents in 2022 but decreased to 548 incidents in 2023.

Meanwhile, City Fire Marshal Chief Inspector Marlon Chomling reported that a total of P 56.8 million worth of properties were damaged in 14 fire incidents recorded in 2023.

For the first 3 months (January-March) of the current year 2024, 6 fire incidents have already been recorded causing about P 570, 000 worth of damage to property.

The Bureau of Fire Protection Dumaguete City also inspected 4, 122 establishments in 2022, which dropped slightly to 4, 078 in 2023.

Col. Fungo also reported that the number of crime incidents in the first 3 months (January-March) 2023 has been almost unchanged at 109 compared to 104 in 2024.

Based on the updated list, PNP Dumaguete reports that there were 1, 141 drug surrenderers/Persons Who Use Drugs; 83 of them graduated from the Matrix Intensive Outpatient Program while 13% of the component barangays of the city are considered drug cleared/free. (PR)
