A member of the provincial board of Negros Oriental has expressed alarm over records showing a drastic increase in the number of deaths involving dengue victims.
Records show that from seven deaths last year, the number has doubled to 14 ending the second week of November this year.
Board Member Liland Estacion, who is a doctor by profession, reiterates the conduct of the 4:00 o’clock habit, search and destroy operations against possible breeding places of dengue-carrying mosquitos and for government not to lower its guard, despite predictions saying a long dry spell has commenced.
A total of 1,588 dengue cases with 14 deaths was reported from different disease reporting units all over the province for the period January to November 14, 2015, compared to the same period last year with 1,288 cases and seven deaths, or an increase of 23 percent.
Most of those affected are 25 days old babies up to adults aged 95. Of the number, 55.5 percent are males and under 21 years old.
Guihulngan City has the highest number of dengue cases with 302, followed by Dumaguete with 290, Canlaon City with 117 cases, Sibulan, 105, Siaton, 71, Jimalalud, 67, Bais City, 62, Bayawan City, 57, Bacong and La Libertad with 51 dengue cases each.
Three deaths each was reported each in Guihulngan and Bacong, two deaths each in Dumaguete and Dauin and one each in Tayasan, Pamplona, Mabinay and Valencia, according to the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit report. (PNA)
