The environmental programs of Foundation University were cited by the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources last week during the culminating activity of the Environment Month Celebration in Cebu City.
The University was awarded, along with 12 other non-government organizations, local government units and private corporations, for its sustainable and eco-friendly practices, for which it also won an award last year.
Engr. Marlon Tanilon, dean of the Office of Student Life and co-chair of the Environment is Everybody’s Concern (EEC) Committee, received the award for the University.
He said Foundation Unviersity was cited for its continuing advocacy on solid waste management within the institution and in partnership with five local government units for recycling of used wood (made into trophies, recycling of electronic waste (computer central processing units CPUs used as stands for flower pots), charcoal briquetting and composting using the biomechanical goat.
The University was also cited for its green initiatives such as paperless transactions, and its information and education campaign on the need to conserve the Banica river.
Other activities cited by the DENR were the poster making workshops and environmental workshops in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental, where the University awarding 25 biomechanical goats to five LGUs in Negros Oriental.
Foundation University was the only school to receive the environmental citation from the DENR.
The ceremony, which was held at the Activity Center of SM City Cebu, was keynoted by DENR Regional Director Isabelo Montejo. (AP)
