Regional director Al Orolfo of the Department of Environment & Natural Resources in the Negros Island Region has announced he will implement the Green Passport program in the Region.
Orolfo was recently named the new DENR director of NIR or Region 18, comprising the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental.
During Orolfo’s recent visit here to meet with DENR officials and employees, he told reporters in an interview that Negros Island has great potentials for eco-tourism and thus the “green passport program” will be suitable for implementation.
The program was started in Region 7 when he was assigned at the DENR there, Orolfo said.
Orolfo explained that the green passport program is designed to promote eco-tourism, involving students enrolled in the natural sciences to become eco-tourism ambassadors.
Part of the program would be to provide the students with competencies and trainings, according to Orolfo.
Likewise, at the end of the program, these students will be given the opportunities to develop them as eco-tourism entrepreneurs, he added.
“We would like to make the youth who are powerful in social media to become ambassadors in eco- tourism”, Orolfo stressed.
Also in Orolfo’s agenda is to address the biodiversity because the DENR recognizes NIR as a biodiversity region that has unique species that need to be protected and conserved. (PNA)
