Much time has been spent on the discussions and debates on the implementation of K+12 program and the inclusion of “Mother Tongue” in the Philippines.

K+12 means kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education. Kindergarten, six years elementary, four years junior high school, two years senior high school. The K-6-4-2 model is compulsory in the public school system.

President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III had said, “We need to add two years to our basic education. Those who can afford, pay up to fourteen years of schooling before university, thus, their children are getting into the best universities and the best jobs after graduation. I want at least 12 years for our public school to give them chance at succeeding”.

This K+12 Basic Education Program will enhance our graduates in the mastery of basic competencies, emotionally mature, and be socially aware. Proactive involvement in the public and civic affairs. The additional two years will also enhance the basic curriculum and better quality education for all. Academic skills and competencies suited to the demands of the jobs today.

Graduates of K+12 program are prepared in the battle of work, landed in good jobs with high salary and even can be globally competitive. In 1987 Constitution, Article XIV, Section 1- The state shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all.

Thus, Article XIV Section 2 (1)- The state shall establish, maintain and support a complete, adequate and integrated system of education relevant to the needs of the people and the society.

Philippines is the only country in Asia with a 10 year pre-university. K+12 is the answer to the needs to achieve quality education in the Philippines; this will facilitate and accelerate economic growth in the country.

The Dumaguete City Division has conducted seminars/workshops related to K+12 program. This was attended by both elementary and secondary teachers in the public and private schools. It aimed to enhance the teachers the effective ways of teachings and handling in the implementation of K+12 program.

The Division staff has made an ocular inspection to the different schools in the said city particularly in the public schools if the classrooms, books, chairs, desks and other learning facilities were enough to accommodate the old and new pupils/students. Our DepEd officials, government officials, stakeholders, teachers and parents strongly support on the implementation of K+12 program for the benefit of our school children. As a university city, different schools in Dumaguete hanged up their banners with the text “K+12 Ready” as a sign of support on this program. We, Dumagueteños, should give our utmost cooperation and relentless support to K+12 program to attain its goal such as decongest and accelerate the basic quality education.
